Det er ikke alle hvalpe der er chipmærkede i Danmark, nogle hvalpe importeres fra udlandet og er derfor blevet chippet i det land de stammer fra. En chip indeholder altid 15 cifre, hvoraf de første 3 cifre afslører hvilket land hunden stammer fra. Hunde der er chippede i Danmark har ALLE et nummer der starter med cifrene 208. Hvis din hund har 3 andre cifre i starten af sit chipnummer, så viser dette at din hund er importeret fra et andet land. ID-mærkning af hunde kan bl.a. bruges til at finde ejere til herreløse hunde eller til at spore ulovlig import af hvalpe.
